Expressway from Galle to Matara opens 31 January 2014

In yesterday's Ceylon Today newspaper, it was confirmed that the 30km extension of the Colombo-Galle expressway will be opened in the first week of March 2014, reducing the journey time from Galle to Matara from just over an hour to 15 minutes. Along with the recent opening of the expressway from the airport to the northern boundary of Colombo, this will reduce journey times to The Teak House to less than three hours.

Matara extension to be opened on 31 January

The Colombo-Galle Southern Expressway’s 30-kilometre extension to Matara will be declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 31 January.
 
Plans are also afoot to extend the highway to Kataragama.
 
“The work of this Rs 18 billion extension, the second phase of the project will be completed end January to be opened on 31 January, Highways Minister Nirmala Kotalawala told Ceylon Today.
 
The cost was inclusive of three intersections at Galle, Weligama and Godagama in Matara and a large number of bridges making the time for the Galle to Matara trek a mere 15 minutes, he said.
 
The funding for the project is 80% from the Government of China and the remainder from the Treasury. The lead contractor is China Engineering Co. Ltd while there is a consortium of others as well. The government will be gazetting the toll rates, which will be from Colombo to Matara and any motorist will have the discretion of starting and departing from any point between Kottawa and Matara.
 
Minister Kotalawala also said that the Kottawa to Kaduwela stretch will also be ready by the time the Matara extension will be ready
